Low Carbon GIA E-learning courses on ship energy efficiency surpass 40,000 enrolments

The Low Carbon Global Industry Alliance to Support Low Carbon Shipping (Low Carbon GIA) E-learning courses on ship energy efficiency have now surpassed 40,000 enrolments, marking an important milestone in efforts to build awareness and practical knowledge on energy efficiency across the maritime sector. Globally, enabling interested developing country stakeholders to strengthen their knowledge in these areas with the support of the Low Carbon GIA.
The two online courses are designed to support accessible, self-paced learning on operational energy efficiency for seafarers and shipping professionals worldwide:
- An introduction to energy efficient ship operation
- Energy saving at sea
Developed under the Low Carbon GIA, these courses aim to strengthen capacity across the maritime sector by providing learning materials to support more energy-efficient ship operations. The strong uptake reflects growing interest in accessible learning solutions that can help advance shipping’s transition towards a lower-carbon future.
The courses have been supported by Low Carbon GIA members, including Grimaldi, one of Italy biggest shipowning companies, which has actively promoted the courses internally and encouraged uptake among its seafarers.
Mr. Dario Bocchetti, Director of R&D, Energy and Decarbonization, Grimaldi Group, said:
“We are pleased to see strong engagement with the Low Carbon GIA E-learning courses, including from within our own company. These courses provide practical and accessible guidance for seafarers and shore-based personnel alike, and we have been happy to promote them internally as part of broader efforts to strengthen awareness and support more energy-efficient ship operations. These courses are included in the Company SEEMP (Ship Energy Efficiency Management Plan) as part of our crew corporate training”
The courses are available free of charge through the UN CC:eLearn platform and can be accessed via the GreenVoyage2050 website here: https://greenvoyage2050.imo.org/e-learning/. They are open to maritime stakeholders worldwide and can be completed online at the learner’s own pace.
This milestone highlights the value of industry-supported training initiatives that can be scaled globally and accessed by a wide range of stakeholders. By making practical learning materials widely available, the Low Carbon GIA continues to support the sharing of knowledge and good practice across the sector, helping to build the human capacity needed to deliver meaningful emissions reductions from shipping.
About the Low Carbon GIA
The Global Industry Alliance to Support Low Carbon Shipping (Low Carbon GIA) is a public-private partnership, established under the framework of IMO GreenVoyage2050, that brings together maritime industry leaders to support an energy efficient and low carbon maritime transport system. Leading shipowners and operators, classification societies, engine and technology builders and suppliers, big data providers, oil companies and ports have joined hands under the Low Carbon GIA to collectively identify and develop innovative solutions to address common barriers to the uptake and implementation of energy efficiency technologies, operational best practices and alternative low- and zero-carbon fuels enabling developing countries to benefit from global best practices.
