IMO Low Carbon GIA updates ship energy efficiency tools

Improving ship energy efficiency remains one of the most immediate and cost-effective ways to reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions from shipping and support the ambitions of the 2023 IMO Strategy on Reduction of GHG Emissions from Ships.

To support stakeholders in identifying and assessing practical energy efficiency measures, the Global Industry Alliance to Support Low Carbon Shipping (Low Carbon GIA) has updated two key resources: the Ship Energy Efficiency Solutions Portal and the Ship Energy Efficiency Appraisal Tool.

 

 Ship Energy Efficiency Solutions Portal

The portal provides users with comprehensive information on energy efficiency solutions in a user-friendly format. It showcases a wide range of technologies and operational measures that can improve ship efficiency and reduce ship fuel consumption.

The portal was initially developed based on the work of the Ad Hoc Expert Working Group on Facilitation of Transfer of Technology for Ships (TT-EG) and supports the implementation of resolution MEPC.229(65) on promoting technical cooperation and technology transfer to improve the energy efficiency of ships.

The content of the portal has been updated to reflect the latest developments in technologies, expected costs, and potential fuel and emissions savings.

 

Ship Energy Efficiency Appraisal Tool

 The associated appraisal tool has been enhanced to help stakeholders investigate and assess energy efficiency measures. While not intended for final decision-making, the tool serves as an initial screening mechanism to identify applicable energy efficiency measures for a chosen ship and compare their costs and benefits. Users can evaluate which measures may have the greatest impact on energy efficiency and which may be the most cost-effective.

The updated version aligns the measures presented in tool with those in the portal and includes:

  • Updated information on costs, expected savings, technology lifetime, and implementation considerations.
  • Updated assessment metrics, including on the Energy Efficiency Existing Ship Index (EEXI) and the annual operational carbon intensity indicator (CII).
  • An enhanced tool interface for improved user experience.

“From hull cleaning and propulsion improvements to weather routing, speed optimization and waste heat recovery, a wide range of technologies and operational measures are already available today to help ships reduce fuel consumption and emissions. These updated resources are designed to provide stakeholders with practical information to help identify, assess and compare different energy efficiency solutions for ships.”
