GreenVoyage2050 Low Carbon GIA agrees future priorities to support maritime decarbonization
The GreenVoyage2050 Programme’s Low Carbon Global Industry Alliance (Low Carbon GIA) agreed four collaborative activities to help accelerate the decarbonization of international shipping at its 25th Task Force meeting, hosted by ABB in Helsinki.
The meeting brought together Low Carbon GIA members to review project proposals and agree a strategic framework that will guide the Alliance’s future work in support of the International Maritime Organization’s (IMO) greenhouse gas (GHG) reduction ambitions.
Members approved four new activities:
- Development of a Key Performance Indicator framework for Port Call Optimization to improve operational efficiency and reduce emissions.
- Delivery of Harbour Master Training to strengthen understanding of relevant IMO regulations and support low-carbon practices at the ship-port interface.
- Updates to the Low Carbon GIA e-learning courses to ensure that training resources reflect the latest developments in maritime decarbonization.
- Development of explanatory materials on Onboard Carbon Capture Storage (OCCS) to improve industry understanding of this emerging technology.
Task Force Chair Eero Lehtovaara (ABB) said:
“The activities approved by the Alliance reflect our shared commitment to practical collaboration in support of maritime decarbonization. Through new resources, capacity-building and knowledge sharing, we aim to help the maritime industry, particularly in developing countries, build the expertise needed to implement the IMO GHG Strategy.”
The Task Force also agreed a new strategic framework defining the Alliance’s vision, mission and operating approach. The framework strengthens the Low Carbon GIA’s role as a platform for public-private collaboration, innovation and knowledge sharing, while providing a clearer process for identifying and delivering future activities in support of the IMO GHG Strategy.
Alongside the strategic discussions, members explored the latest market developments and technologies supporting maritime decarbonization through presentations from ABB and Kpler. Kpler shared insights into global energy and shipping market trends and volatility, while ABB provided an overview of its electric propulsion technologies, including advanced drive systems and Azipod® propulsion, and their contribution to improving vessel efficiency and reducing emissions. Participants also visited ABB’s Drives manufacturing facility, Azipod® factory and Azipod® training simulator to gain first-hand insights into these technologies and their practical application.
