GreenVoyage2050 Annual Donor Meeting Highlights Progress and Welcomes New Support from Denmark
GreenVoyage2050 convened its first annual donor meeting since transitioning from a project to a programme, welcoming on board new donors to discuss the expanded programme of support to developing countries to reduce GHG emissions from ships. The GreenVoyage2050 programme has been instrumental in providing technical assistance, capacity building, and policy support to maritime nations, helping them develop National Action Plans and undertake feasibility studies for pilot projects.
One of the key highlights was the announcement of a new funding commitment of approximately US$ 2.8 million from the Government of Denmark provided to the IMO GHG Trust Fund – a portion of which has been earmarked for activities under the GreenVoyage2050 programme. The contribution of Denmark to GreenVoyage2050 expands the group of donors that consists of Finland, France, Germany, the Netherlands, and Norway, further strengthening the programme’s ability to deliver impact in 2025 and beyond. The support underscores the growing international commitment to accelerating the transition to a greener, more sustainable maritime industry.
During the meeting, the programme team provided updates on key milestones, including a new cohort of partnering countries, selected through an open call process for support in either developing a National Action Plan, or towards assessing feasibility for pilot projects. The meeting was also informed on expanded partnerships to support developing countries in exploring maritime alternative fuel production opportunities. The financial status was also reviewed to ensure resource alignment with 2025 priorities.
Reflecting on the meeting, Astrid Dispert, GreenVoyage2050 Programme Manager, emphasized the importance of continued collaboration:
“The success of GreenVoyage2050 programme is built on strong partnerships and the shared commitment of our donors to drive meaningful change. The continued support from our longstanding partners, as well as new commitments such as Denmark’s, ensures that we can help developing countries navigate the transition to low- and zero-carbon shipping. With the momentum we have, 2025 will be a crucial year for delivering tangible progress on the ground where we will turn ambitions into action.”
GreenVoyage2050 Programme
GreenVoyage2050 is a major technical cooperation programme initiated by the IMO to assist developing countries in reducing GHG emissions from shipping, aligning with the 2023 IMO GHG Strategy. Phase I of GreenVoyage2050 (2020-2023) supported partnering countries in developing policy frameworks and pilot projects to reduce GHG emissions from ships. Phase II (2024-2030) continues and expands this support, leveraging substantial funding from donors including Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, the Netherlands, and Norway.
