Egyptian students inspired to explore green shipping careers

As part of its mission to raise awareness and spark youth interest in maritime decarbonization, IMO’s GreenVoyage2050 programme in collaboration with the Egyptian Maritime Transport & Logistics Sector, recently hosted an awareness session on ‘Green Shipping Career Opportunities’.
Hosted at the iconic Bibliotheca Alexandrina, the event brought together students from across Alexandria to explore the vital role of shipping in global trade and its growing emphasis on sustainability.
Egypt’s position as a strategic maritime hub – particularly through the Suez Canal – was highlighted as a key enabler for innovation in low- and zero-carbon shipping. Students also learned about the IMO’s 2023 GHG Strategy and Egypt’s development of a National Action Plan to reduce emissions across its ports and domestic fleet.
The session concluded with a Q&A, where students raised questions about the skills needed to succeed in the maritime sector, opportunities for youth in the green economy, and how digitalization is reshaping the industry.
Reflecting on the session, Jamie Jones, Senior Project Assistant for the GreenVoyage2050 programme said:
“Egypt’s youth have an incredible opportunity to lead the way in maritime decarbonization. By combining their energy, enthusiasm and creativity with the country’s strategic maritime position and emerging green technologies, they can shape a future where shipping is both innovative and sustainable. We hope sessions like this spark curiosity and empower more young people, especially women, to consider careers in this sector.”
This event is part of GreenVoyage2050’s broader efforts to raise awareness and promote inclusive career pathways in maritime decarbonization, ensuring that the next generation is equipped to lead the industry’s green transition.
